When looking at the three major ethnic groups in the UK (White, Asian and Black) and how they are represented amongst professionally qualified clinical staff you can see that White people are the majority at 68.7% followed by Asian people at 15.9% and then Black people at 8.0%. So, there are around 4.3 times more professionally qualified clinical staff that are white compared to Asian and 8.6 times more that are White compared to those that are Black. When comparing those that are Asian to those that are black, there are around 2 times more Asian professionally qualified clinical staff than Black professionally qualified clinical staff.
If we compare this to overall national population statistics, White people make up 81.7% of the population, Asian people make up 9.3% followed by Black people who are 4.0% of the national population. So, in overall population there are 8.8 times more White people than Asian people, so a little more than double the discrepancy between White professionally qualified clinical staff and Asian professionally qualified clinical staff in the NHS (4.3 times as mentioned previously). Furthermore, in overall population there are 20 times more White people than Black people, again a little more than double the discrepancy than that found in the NHS between White professionally qualified clinical staff and Black professionally qualified clinical staff. When looking at just Asian people and Black people, there are 2.3 times more Asian people than Black people in overall population so very similar to the difference between the amount of Asian professionally qualified clinical staff and Black professionally qualified clinical staff in the NHS (around 2 times more Asian professionally qualified clinical staff than Black professionally qualified clinical staff). This shows that within the NHS, Black and Asian professionally qualified clinical staff are overrepresented compared to their White counterparts, highlighting the significant proportion of their community that dedicate themselves to the NHS in their respective communities.
